9. CRITICAL REFLECTION
Module learning:
Some of the
goals I had set for myself at the beginning of the course were to be able to produce
be a better writer and to learn to be more creative in terms of thinking. I believe
that I have made improvement with respect to my initial goals, however, I can do
even better with time. Afterall, the end of this course should not mark the end
of learning and improving. As for how I managed to work towards my goals during
the length of this course, I did the following: I tried to focus during lessons
and absorb as much as I could, I tried to be clear of the requirements of each lesson
and of the tasks at hand. From doing so, I believe I absorbed more than I otherwise
would if I were to go to classes on an “autopilot” mode. The first assignment
on the reader response allowed me to put the lessons learnt in class to good use.
I learnt about the Paul Elder Framework, having good transitions between sentences
and paragraphs and relearnt how to cite sources. I strongly believe that
whatever I learnt for writing can follow me throughout my journey in SIT and at
the workplace in the future as I see myself writing reports and proposals in
the future. In terms of being creative in thinking, there were countless
opportunities for us to work on this in class, Sir Brad would often throw a
question at the class and ask us to discuss within our groups and come up with
an answer in a few minutes. This really helped develop creativity in terms of
thinking. I must add that we also had Generative AI that we could rely on, and
that assisted us in giving us a guideline to answer or to improve our answers. Once
again, I did improve in terms of writing and being a more creative thinker, but
this learning journey does not end here, and the course was a great boost for
me in those areas.
Project
learning:
One key
aspect of my project that I would like to reflect on would be presentation
skills. I would say that the presentation aspect of a project also ties with teamwork
skills. With respect to this project and my team members, I learnt that everyone
in the team has their own strengths and weaknesses. I believe that it would
have been good to identify these things early on and figure out how we could
work around it. I learnt that I require a long time to practice and familiarize
myself with the content that I am presenting. However, was not the case with all
the members of my team. This was because everyone had different knowledge of
the system being discussed beforehand. This meant that I had to learn more
about our system before presenting it. Additionally, when it came to the QnA
portion of our presentation, I was not able to have a chance to answer
questions that were given to my team due to not being as familiar and confident
about my team’s chosen system. I believe I should have anticipated this
beforehand and did some research on the system and the ideas surrounding it so
that I would be able to deliver a better presentation and answer any questions regarding
the system that our team picked. Nevertheless, I still believe that this was a
great opportunity to work with a team where there was an expert in our topic. I
believe that I would be able to encounter such things at the workplace in the future
and it would always be beneficial to learn more about systems/devices I am dealing
with.
